Empowering First-Generation College Students: A Journey to Good Morning Arizona

Achieving the dream of higher education is a significant milestone, especially for first-generation college students. Their stories are often filled with determination, resilience, and the pursuit of a better future.

Wednesday, November 8th is a first-generation day, celebrating the achievements and contributions of those who are the first in their families to pursue higher education. Every first-generation college student has a unique and compelling story. Whether it's overcoming financial barriers, navigating the unfamiliar terrain of academia, or breaking through societal expectations, their journeys are marked by triumphs and challenges.

I’m sharing an inspiring story of an Arizona State University first-gen college student and exploring the journey that led to her feature on Good Morning Arizona.

Elizabeth Navarro, a junior studying anthropology and psychology, embarked on a remarkable journey fueled by a relentless pursuit of knowledge and a burning desire to defy the odds. From a background where higher education seemed like an unattainable dream, Elizabeth navigated the complexities of the college application process and embraced the challenges that came with being a trailblazer in her family.

She’s a first-generation Latina student who overcame imposter syndrome early in her college journey through the support of other first-generation students and family. She’s now the Co-President of First Generation Students at Barrett, The Honors College where she helps create spaces for first-generation students to feel understood, seen and validated.

First-gen college students often face hurdles that their peers might not fully understand. Balancing academic responsibilities, work commitments, and the pressure to succeed can be daunting. Elizabeth encountered and conquered these challenges with unwavering determination and made it her mission to support those like her.

Behind every first-gen success story is a network of support. Family, friends, mentors, and community resources play pivotal roles in the journey to higher education. Elizabeth found encouragement in unexpected places, and the bonds formed during this transformative journey are a testament to the power of community support.

The Road to Good Morning Arizona

Getting a feature on a morning TV spot isn’t easy, but Elizabeth caught the attention of Good Morning Arizona with her compelling story.

When I heard of Elizabeth’s story, I knew it would be a perfect fit for Arizona’s Family. The Phoenix TV station and its journalists highlight the experiences of community members who make a positive impact. Elizabeth is a young, valley native who is building a path for herself and inspiring other young people to overcome fear for the pursuit of education.

The feature on GMAZ was a personal triumph and family celebration for Elizabeth who grew up watching GMAZ and Tess Rafols who hosted the segment. Elizabeth was thrilled to meet Tess and the interview couldn’t have gone any better.
